Description
Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald is a ROM hack of Pokemon Emerald that merges the worlds of Monster Hunter and Pokemon. In this project, the traditional Pokemon have been replaced with iconic monsters from the Monster Hunter franchise, offering a fresh visual and gameplay experience while preserving the core structure of the original game.
As a binary ROM hack, the fundamental storyline, progression, and gameplay mechanics of Pokemon Emerald remain intact. The primary focus is on aesthetic and content changes—introducing Monster Hunter creatures in place of Pokemon, along with a few minor additions designed to enhance and refresh the experience without altering the game’s overall identity.
This project is intended for fans of both franchises who are looking for a unique crossover that stays true to the classic Pokemon Emerald framework.
Features
While this is a relatively straightforward ROM hack, the primary appeal lies in the introduction of monsters from the Monster Hunter series. Here’s what players can expect:
- Level Caps have been implemented to help balance progression.
- The Physical/Special Split is included, modernizing the battle system.
- Over 100 Monsters from the Monster Hunter series replace all standard Pokemon encounters.
- All monsters feature custom front sprites, shiny variants, and team icons. Due to limitations, backsprites are not unique.
- Many item names and icons have been adjusted to better reflect the Monster Hunter universe.
- Several moves from Generation 4 and beyond have been added, alongside entirely new custom moves.
- Most existing moves have been updated to reflect modern base power and mechanics.
- Additional changes—such as new type resistances—are detailed in an accompanying spreadsheet.
Apart from that, the game doesn’t really have any changes. Any of the optional modes such as the Battle Frontier (& breeding) aren’t supported whatsoever. You can still play them, but you will inevitably discover Pokemon/bugs in the modes. This also includes the Trick House after the first Room, as well as rebattling opponents.
Evolution Stone Changes
Because Pokemon and Monster Hunter are very different games, evolution works a little differently in this ROM hack.
There are 5 special Evolution Stones that replace the usual Fire, Water, Moon, and other stones. You can buy them in the Market at different points in the game—some are available early, and others unlock as you progress.
These stones are used to evolve certain monsters into stronger forms once they are fully grown. This is not for every monster—many still evolve by leveling up like in the original Pokemon games. The stones are only needed for monsters that need one more step to reach their final form.
Extra: Small Tips
- You’ll find 999 Rare Candies in your PC. You can use them to level up your monsters more easily, if you want. There’s still plenty to explore!
- It’s a good idea to switch your team members from time to time. Try out different monsters!
