Description
Pokemon SoulGold is a Johto-focused Pokemon Emerald ROM Hack that takes the familiar Johto adventure and greatly expands it with new locations, modern Pokemon mechanics, additional battle systems, and plenty of optional content.
The main adventure still follows the traditional Pokemon formula of exploring Johto, catching and training Pokemon, earning Gym Badges, and eventually challenging the Pokemon League. However, the region itself has been expanded with new routes, villages, biomes, optional areas, and completely refreshed tilesets.
SoulGold also adds content throughout the main game instead of saving everything for the postgame. Battle Facilities can be accessed during your journey, Hidden Grottos reset every day, Legendary Pokemon can appear as boss battles, and numerous optional challenges reward players who want to explore everything Johto has to offer.
Becoming Champion is also far from the end, with new high-level areas, Legendary encounters, additional Pokemon progression, Title Defense battles, Battle Facilities, and many other postgame activities waiting afterward.

Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution is one of the major mechanics in Pokemon SoulGold and is integrated directly into the game’s progression.
All nine available starter Pokemon can eventually Mega Evolve. SoulGold also introduces new Mega Evolutions for Pokemon whose starter lines previously did not have one, including Mega Typhlosion, Mega Meowscarada, and Mega Primarina.
Mega Stones have also been changed into type-based stones. Instead of carrying a different Mega Stone for every individual Pokemon, compatible Pokemon use stones based on their typing, making the system much easier to manage.
The Mega Evolutions included in SoulGold are obtainable by the player rather than being limited to opposing Trainers.
Battle Facilities and Boss Battles
Pokemon SoulGold brings Battle Facility content into the main adventure instead of keeping all of it locked behind the Pokemon League.
The Battle Factory becomes available after the third Gym Badge and allows you to choose rented Pokemon before facing a series of facility opponents. More Battle Facilities become available as you progress through the game and postgame.
Several Legendary Pokemon also use a boss-style battle system. These Pokemon can have multiple health bars and must first be defeated before you reach the normal capture stage.
This turns encounters with powerful Legendary Pokemon into more substantial battles instead of simply weakening them and immediately throwing Poke Balls.
Expanded Johto
Johto has been greatly expanded while still keeping the original region recognizable.
New routes, villages, caves, deserts, islands, icy environments, and other locations have been added throughout both the main story and postgame.
Some of the new areas include Vajra Desert, Rinto Village, Kitakami Border, Tohjo Pass, and Meteor Island, along with several high-level locations that become important later in the adventure.
Daily Hidden Grottos also give you reasons to return to areas you have already explored, since they can contain Pokemon and useful items that refresh every day.
Postgame
Pokemon SoulGold contains a substantial postgame designed to continue progression after becoming Champion.
Pokemon can eventually unlock additional innate abilities at higher levels, allowing multiple abilities to work together once their requirements have been met.
New locations containing stronger Trainers become available, while additional Legendary and Mythical encounters provide more reasons to continue exploring the expanded region.
The Title Defense system also changes repeat Pokemon League runs by allowing different challengers to face you after defeating the Elite Four.
Players interested in completing everything can also work toward all 121 trophies while taking on additional Battle Facilities, boss encounters, daily activities, and high-level areas.
Quality of Life
SoulGold includes a large number of quality-of-life improvements designed to make building and changing teams much easier.
The Candy Jar collects extra experience after the first Gym and converts it into EXP Candies that can be used to help new Pokemon catch up with the rest of your team.
Moves can be relearned directly from the party interface, EXP All can be toggled, and HM moves do not need to take up normal move slots for field progression.
Many Water-type Pokemon also receive their own Surf sprites, while improvements to battle messages, animations, music transitions, and other systems help make the overall adventure feel faster and smoother.
Important Note
Pokemon SoulGold is an independent fan project built using an unofficial expansion port of Pokemon Heart & Soul.
It is not developed by, endorsed by, or affiliated with the official Pokemon Heart & Soul development team and is separate from the official Heart & Soul 2.0 project.

19 Boxes Beta Version
A separate Pokemon SoulGold 19-Boxes Beta is also available. It contains the same game content as the current version, but increases the PC storage from 16 boxes to 19 boxes.
This version is still experimental, so make a backup of your save before using it. Once you save the game with the 19 Boxes version, you cannot return to an older 16-box version using that save, making the upgrade effectively one-way.
